WalkAmerica gears up for trek
From staff reports
Feb. 15, 2002 - March of Dimes is looking for teams for the annual WalkAmerica.
On March 16, teams will walk five miles to help raise money for the organization which generates funds to help prevent birth defects.
Contributing factors to birth defects in North Carolina are low birth weight, lack of prenatal care of mothers-to-be and SIDS.
Lincoln County WalkAmerica 2002 will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 16 at Betty G. Ross Park. Registration begins at 8.
Individuals and businesses may form teams to help raise money. Participants ask others to sponsor their walk, and the money should be turned in the morning of the event. There is a $10
minimum to participate.
A celebration will be held at the park after the walk.
Last year a team from the Lincoln County government raised over $1,600 for the campaign.
Their team and a team from the Lincoln County Health Department were honored recently at a team captains’ rally for their continuing effort.
Participating businesses in the area include Lincoln Medical Center, The Home Place Restaurant, La-Z-Boy, Abernethy Chevrolet, Piedmont Companies, Vermont
American, Ebony & White’s Funeral Service, Hooker Furniture Corporation, The Drug Store, St. Matthews United Church of Christ, Haworth, Kiwanis Club of Lincolnton, and King’s Office Supply.
Anyone who would like to get a registration card or more information should call Kara Mariaca at 704-377-2009.
