Delta Mills will shut down
March 10, 2003 - MAIDEN (AP) — Delta Mills will shut down in May, leaving 120 employees out of work.
The plant produces cotton yarn used in woven apparel fabric for Delta Mills’ parent company, Delta Woodside, based in Greenville, S.C.
The closing will help the company remain competitive by reducing costs, according to a Delta Mills news release.
The loosening of import quotas in China played a vital part in the decision, said plant manager Edwin Jeffords.
“We must be competitive when the quotas are completely lifted in 2005,” Jeffords said. “We simply can’t produce the yarn on a level that is competitive.”
The decision shocked many of the plant’s employees, who were notified Wednesday, Jeffords said.
“This was a big surprise since our business had picked up in the last month and half,” he said.
Company officials are working to place employees at other Delta Woodside plants and other jobs in the Hickory region. It has five other plants, all in South
Carolina.
Delta bought the 115,000-square-foot Maiden plant in 1988.
