October 2, 2002 - The Lincoln Charter School’s ABCs testing scores for the 2001-02 school year remained close to the previous year’s levels,
according to statistics released last month by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

KI pills will be offered to residents near McGuire
October 2, 2002 - Local health departments will soon begin passing out anti-radiation pills to residents living near McGuire Nuclear Station.
The Potassium Iodide (KI) pill will be distributed to residents living within the 10-mile emergency planning zones, around McGuire, as well as Catawba Nuclear
Power Station, according to a press release from Maggie Dollar, Lincoln County Health Department director.

At its meeting Thursday night in City Hall, the City Council voted 3-2 against a motion made by Councilman Les Cloninger that would have permitted David and

October 7, 2002 - County health officials will hand out Potassium Iodide tablets Saturday, Oct. 19 and
Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Residents living within the 10-mile emergency planning zone around McGuire Nuclear Station are not required to accept the pills, but they are encouraged,
Maggie Dollar, health director, said in a press release Friday.

Higher fines considered for zoning rules

October 7, 2002 - A proposed amendment to a county ordinance will raise fines for violating zoning
rules.
Another amendment will lessen the amount of time residents have to fix the problem before each day is considered a separate offense.
A public hearing on these amendments will be held tonight. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Room in the Citizens Center.

County commissioners Monday night voted to raise the local sales tax by half a penny, thereby patching a gaping
hole left by state budget cuts.

Truck hits house

October 9, 2002 - A man was sent to Lincoln Medical Center Tuesday after his truck crashed into A.J. Lemmond's house at 930 Buffalo Shoals
Road. Authorities at the scene said the man, whose name was not available early today, was traveling down Buffalo Shoals and struck a car at the intersection of Bethel Church Road, continued through a
field, and crashed into the home. Three occupants of the home were not injured.

of break-ins and thefts.
Sheriff’s detectives arrested a former airport employee, Jeffrey Scott Keever, in connection with several incidents that spanned the months of

The 2001 North Carolina General Assembly passed laws to amend the absentee voting process to allow voters to cast an absentee ballot in all elections without

October 16, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — Cherryville’s water situation continues to improve with each shower that
rolls through the area, but the city isn’t in the clear yet, according to Interim City Manager David Lowe.
During Monday’s
city council meeting. Lowe said Saturday’s relaxation of Class IV water restrictions provided him with the “evidence needed” to temporarily lift the restrictions for both days next weekend.

Mike Holder, an engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation’s 12th division said Tuesday that the environmental permit is the “last hurdle” the DOT

October 25, 2002 - In many ways, Elaine Harmon and Beth Saine are alike.
Both are 55, both have extensive real estate experience, and both want to be Lincoln County’s register of deeds after Nov. 5.
The register of deeds, who earns $47,000 per year, is responsible for recording real estate documents in Lincoln County and maintaining vital records,
including birth, death and marriage certificates. The office has to ensure each document meets specific legal requirements.

downtown area; now it just needs to figure out what to paint.
The council has scheduled a public meeting for tonight at 7:30 in the Council Chambers at City Hall to resume discussions that started more than a month ago on
a mural project in the downtown area.

With 31 years of teaching in the Lincoln County school system under his belt, Hatley, 53, decided he wanted to run for Lincoln County Clerk of Court when
long-time clerk Pam Huskey announced her intentions to retire in January.

Peeler says experience counts in race

October 30, 2002 - For more than half her life, Teresa Peeler has worked in the Lincoln County Clerk of
Court office.
Since May 1, Peeler, 36, has headed that office as the interim clerk after Pam Huskey, who filled the position for 16 years, decided to retire. It is that
experience that Peeler, the Democratic candidate for clerk, hopes will carry her to a four-year term on Election Day.

the city and lightened in the county.
City of Lincolnton water customers are now free to wash their cars and water their plants; county customers are asked to voluntarily conserve water.

The new queen shined Friday’s rainy cool night.
Crowned by 2001 Queen Monica Ledford, Robin, a senior, was selected from a field of 12 contestants.
