Adoptive, foster families honored at DSS luncheon
Special to the LTN
November 25, 2002 - An adoption awareness celebration Saturday turned into a program of thanksgiving as parents and children were honored during lunch
at the Lincoln Cultural Center.
The event, hosted by the Lincoln County Department of Social Services, recognized foster and adoptive families. Children services staff director Sandy Kennedy
welcomed the group and had words of praise for adoptive families.
“Without these families, our work would be very sad, but finding families for the children makes us very happy,” she said.
Kennedy introduced District Court Judge Dean Black, who expressed appreciation for the support of the social workers. Through his work with the courts, Black
said he was familiar with the work social services does.
“They do a great job and most of it is behind the scenes,” Black said.
Susan McCracken, DSS director, thanked adoptive families for making a home for the children, and she praised the workers for their success in finding homes for
the children.
Kennedy said that Lincoln County had nine children adopted this year and approximately 50 children in foster care.
Lincoln and Burke counties have jointed in an adoption campaign.
Kennedy said it was a successful venture with each county sharing success stories and other information about foster care and adoption.
Several parents shared stories about the happiness their children had brought into their lives and the benefits of parenthood.
Adoptive parents and their children received family photographs and center table floral bouquets as gifts.
Several volunteers for the Guardian ad Litem program also attended the event.
