Jan. 30, 2002 - Lincolnton made sure it didn’t overlook Chase this time, as the Wolves blasted the Trojans 90-55.

Jan. 30, 2002 - Led by freshman Julius Powell's 24 points and six blocked shots, Newton-Conover pulled away down the stretch for a 72-52 win over West Lincoln Tuesday night.

Wolves drop another close conference game

Jan. 28, 2002 - NEWTON — Julius Powell scored eight points in the fourth period and Newton-Conover’s pressure defense help lift the host Red Devils to a 60-56 win over Lincolnton Friday.

Middle School Wrestling Results

Jan. 28, 2002 - The West Lincoln Middle School wrestling team competed in the Indian Classic wrestling tournament at St. Stephen’s on Jan. 26 . They had 17 individual place winners in the tournament.

West teams enjoy weekend with wins

Jan. 28, 2002 - FOREST CITY — The West Lincoln varsity basketball teams Traveled to Chase Friday and came back with a pair of wins.

Jeremy Parker drained the nets for 19 point to lead the Rebels to a 81-57 whipping of Chase.

Green Wave swallow Mustangs East girls get big win in OT

Jan. 28, 2002 - GASTONIA — The Ashbrook Green Wave proved it was the cream of the crop in the Big South 3A Conference with a convincing 73-44 in over East Lincoln Friday play.

Ashbrook (16-1, 7-0), did it with a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Mustangs (10-6, 3-4).

Julius Blum beats Timken to win the Industrial League

Jan. 25, 2002 - Lee Ward’s layup with 35 seconds left gave the Julius Blum the lead for good against Timken as Julius Blum went on to capture its first Lincoln Recreation Industrial League basketball championship Wednesday.

Jan. 25, 2002 - The first half of the conference season is over. Some of the local teams are in position to jockey for a playoff spot.

Lincolnton lost its first five games of the before finally before it finally started getting things together.

Jan. 23, 2002 - The inconsistency that has marked Lincolnton’s basketball season surfaced at the wrong time.

The Wolves went into a Tuesday night home game against East Rutherford with a three-game winning streak and an opportunity to be 5-2 at the midpoint of the Midwest 2A Conference race.

Jan. 23, 2002 - The Rebels closed the gap but they couldn’t get the win Tuesday night at Bunker Hill. West closed to within seven points in the fourth quarter in the 69-57 loss. Coach Jason Kingery pulled up two JV players to varsity: Cody Branton and Ben Bryant.

Mustangs wrestlers steadily improving

Jan. 21, 2002 - The East Lincoln wrestling team is making a name for itself.

With new head coach Jim Prevost, the Mustangs as of last week have posted a 8-10 record.

 But that’s despite losing 16 wrestlers from the start of the season.

Jan. 21, 2002 - CLAREMONT —Lincolnton’s Eric Wilson poured in a game-high 20 points to propel the Wolves to a 62-53 win over Bunker Hill Friday.

East Lincoln teams lose close games to East Gaston

Jan. 21, 2002 - DENVER — The East Lincoln basketball team hosted the most feared team the Big South 3A Conference Friday.

East Gaston and  6 foot-9 inch center Tyler Berg came into the game as perhaps the best team in the conference.

Pumpkin Center teams wins over ELMS

Jan. 18, 2002 - DENVER — The Pumpkin Center boys and girls basketball teams both beat their arch rival, Each Lincoln Middle Thursday.

Both games were hard fought.

In the boys game, Lance Friday hit the game-winning basket with 29 seconds left then he secured a missed shot by East.

 “Choo Choo” Justice and others will be inducted into Saturday’s Cherryville Sports Hall of Fame

Former UNC running back, Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice will receive an honorary induction in the Cherryville Sports Hall of Fame Saturday night.

Justice, who also starred in the Washington Redskins’ backfield, has owned an insurance company here for years.

Lincolnton ekes out a pair of  home wins over Shelby

Jan. 16, 2002 - Eric Wilson picked the perfect time to end his struggles at the free throw line.

The sophomore guard hit eight of nine free throws, including six straight in the final two minutes, as Lincolnton held on to beat Shelby 54-51 Tuesday night at home.

Jan. 16, 2002 - VALE — Get out the brooms.

The Bandys girls and boys basketball teams cleaned out both West Lincoln teams Tuesday with big blowouts, leaving the Rebels’ home court with a sweep.

Jan. 16, 2002 - CATAWBA — The West Lincoln High School wrestling team defeated Bandys 40-26 Tuesday.

Wins for West were scored by the following teammates: Daniel Scronce 112 weight class; Zeb Elmore 125; Josh Hullette 130; Cory Norman 140; Eric Steele 145; C. J. Deputy 171; Antonio Rojo 215; and Aaron Terry in the heavyweight category. 

Their record is now 20-7, 2-1 in Conference. The next match will be Friday at Shelby.

Mustangs are Stallions with conference win over Huss

Jan. 16, 2002 - Tripp Miller poured in a game-high 20 points to lead East Lincoln to a big conference win at Hunter Huss, 61-57.

The visiting Mustangs raced out to lead at the half 31-23 and withstood a strong come back down the stretch to pen up the Huskies in Big South 3A Conference play.

Jan. 14, 2002 - DENVER — At halftime of the East Lincoln-North Gaston boys basketball game Friday, East forward Tripp Miller said he and several other teammates had a talk.

Basically they said it was time to take care of business.

Cory Norman got his 109th high school career win to lead Westy Lincoln to a 46-22 win at East Rutherford Friday.

Norman who won by decision in the 140 weight class, is now eight shy of the school record of 117.

Jan. 11, 2002 - DENVER — It must be something about East Lincoln’s gym because Lincolnton varsity basketball boys team can’t win there this season.

The (1-6) Wolves lost three games there in the First Charter Holiday Classic.

Rec Department to hold racquet ball tournament

The Lincolnton/Lincoln County recreation department is sponsoring a racquetball tournament beginning Jan. 28 at the Lentz Recreation Center.

Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles matches will be held. There will be three divisions: advanced, intermediate, and beginner for each category.

Jan. 9, 2002 - VALE — The West Lincoln Middle School girls and the Lincolnton Middle boys basketball teams were victorious Monday.

Holly Hoover scored 10 points and Jessie Watts added nine to lead the Lady Chiefs to a 36-11 win over LMS Monday.

Newton gives the Rebel wrestlers the figs

Jan. 9, 2002 - VALE — The West Lincoln wrestling team’s string of seven straight conference titles is in jeopardy.

Tenth-ranked Newton-Conover pinned the ninth-rated Rebels, 40-27, Tuesday in Midwest 2-A Conference action.

Local ladies teams get victories, LHS boys fall

Jan. 9, 2002 - The Lincolnton High School varsity basketball teams played at Chase on Tuesday with very different outcomes.

The Lady Wolves defeated the Trojans 43-25. They had a great beginning in the first quarter at 14-2, by half time, they were up 20-7. They pulled away in the third quarter to cruise to victory.

LHS tight end Corella selected to AP All-state team

Jan. 4, 2002 - RALEIGH (AP) — Lincolnton football player Rafael Corella was named to the Associate Press All-State team Thursday.

The tight end had 604 receiving yards and nine touchdowns for the Wolves in 2001.

He played a key role for the team all year long and made clutch catches against Bandys in the regular season and against Shelby and Burlington Cummings in the 2A state playoffs.

We’ve heard that line a lot lately. It seems that every young golfer wants to follow in those big footsteps.

But Billy Cease is one of the few that have the potential.

Cherryville's Billy Cease has won junior championships in Gaston, Catawba and Cleveland Counties.

Both third-string quarterback Travis Conrad and student-athlete Nicole Bowman died in car accidents. Both incidents had huge impact on the football team.

Jan. 7, 2002 - VALE — Lincolnton-West Lincoln basketball games came down to who wanted it more.

On Saturday, maybe Lincolnton boys and girls varsity teams had more desire as the Wolves came home with both wins.
