LHS boys tennis wins
Lincolnton boys tennis team won its season opener 6-3 at South Point.
No. 1 Patrick Fletcher, No. 2 John James, No. 4 Joseph Allender and No. 6 Jimmy Thackston all won their singles matches.
The Wolves’ doubles wins came from Will Setzer-Thackston and A. Allender-High.

Shot at buzzer beats LHS girls in playoffs

Feb. 27, 2002 - It was heartbreak for the Lady Wolves.
Tonia Hall nailed a 30-foot last second shot to give Mitchell a stunning 44-41 win over Lincolnton Monday in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.
Hall’s shot came after Mitchell intercepted an inbound pass from Lincolnton just past halfcourt. Hall took a couple of dribbles and launched the game-winner.

West Lincoln’s Cory Norman has seen the Parade a few times growing up.

Lincoln 53-46 in second round play of the Big South 3A conference tournament.
Ashbrook made 9 of 12 over the last three and one half minutes of play to best the Mustangs.

Feb. 22, 2002 - HICKORY— Lincolnton danced with the Red Devils all night long but just couldn’t stick the pitchfork in deep enough.
Newton-Conover rallied from nine points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Wolves in overtime, 69-64.
The loss ended the Wolves’ bid at winning the Midwest 2A Conference tournament and ended the Wolves’ season.

us (especially) with their quickness. They stepped into our passing lanes, (got steals) and BAM…it’s 24-5.”
That’s what Hoyle saw in the first quarter of his team’s 73-54 loss against Bandys Tuesday night.

The Mustangs outscored South Point 39-27 in the second half to win the game to advance.

Feb. 13, 2002 - VALE — It was Senior Night at West Lincoln, but Bunker Hill prevented the Rebel seniors
from going out as winners in their final home appearance.
In the varsity opener, the powerful Bunker Hill girls outscored West Lincoln 27-9 in the first quarter and never looked back en route to an 89-36 win.

East Lincoln swim teams place
East Lincoln swim teams placed in 3A West regionals according to a NorthCarolina-ihigh.com report.
The boys came in 11th with 83 points. Ryan Fairchild came in sixth in the 100-yard freestyle and ninth in the 50 free. Adam Fier was eighth in the
100-yard backstroke.
The tream of Fairchild, Fier, Will Walker and Patrick Jlley was eighth in the 200 medley relay and seventh in the 200 free relay.
The girls team came in 24th in the regionals but didn’t get a top 10 finish in any of the events.

Feb. 8, 2002 - Maiden High School's Lamont Reid official signed a letter of intent to play football for Western Carolina University.
Reid (in the middle) is pictured with his parents (Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Brice) to his sides and standing is his head coach Tom Brown and the school's principal Dwayne Finger. Reid gained over 2,200
all-purpose yards this season and scored 30 touchdowns as he led the Blue Devils to a confernece title and the third round of the playoffs. He was named the Southern Foothills Conference's Player of the
Year. WCU new head coach Kent Briggs said Reid will get playing time right of way.

Lowery took over in the second half of his team’s game against Lincolnton Middle Thursday.
He poured in 17 points in the half and hit six straight free throws at the end to second the Falcons’ 55-47 win over LMS.

This was payback by the Wolves for an earlier loss to these same East Lincoln Mustangs during the second week of January.

Feb. 2, 2002 - Doug Herbert celebrated Christmas a little earlier than most people and it’s taken him
several weeks to be able to enjoy his best gift.
Herbert hired Johnny West as tuner and co-crew chief on his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster in November and he has been waiting patiently for preseason
testing to go for a ride.

top six fishermen of the 2001 season.
The top six were: Waylon Pitts, Doug McClure, Aaron Dixon, Darrell Stewart, Mitch Burgin, and Larry Patrick.
