Trojans play powerhouse ball

Hot bats, fast pitching, dynamic defense

TERRANCE THOMAS, Staff Writer

April 10, 2002 - SHERRILS FORD — There’s a high school baseball team out there that can make the west side of the lake shake.

Bandys has everything that a state contender needs, great pitching, solid hitting and excellent defense.

The Trojans are 9-2 and ranked seventh in the state’s 2A poll.

“We’re doing pretty good right now,” the team’s head coach Doug McRee. “We have good pitching, and defense. Our bats have been a surprise. We’ve has a lot of kids stepped up for us.”

When people mention Bandys the next word out of their mouth is Kris Harvey.

Harvey is the son of former major leaguer Bryan Harvey. McRee said pitching is in his genes.

“He’s probably the best player I’ve coached in 13 years,” McRee said. “His success was inherited. He can throw consistently around 88-89 miles per hour. He has been clocked at 93. He can hit well too.”

Harvey did a number on Lincolnton recently. He shut out the Wolves 11-0.

“He’s an legitimate prospect,” Lincolnton coach Bobby Martin said. “He was clocked at 91 (miles per hour) when we faced him. The scouts are calling to (find out) when he’ll pitch (in our Easter Tournament).”

But Bandys is more than Harvey.

Trey Miller is the No. 2 pitcher. He also catches. McRee said he’s having a solid year batting over .300. Other players Zach Elliot, John Hass, Kyle Helderman, Matt Howard, Wesley Lail, Justin Harper and Bradley Richards have made the team a force to be reckoned with.

“If everything goes right for us, we’ll win the state,” said Miller. “We just got to pitch well and hit the ball. it’s simple as that.”

So far they have been doing just that.

In a recent game against Maiden, Miller hit a three-run homer while Hass went 2-for-3. But the story of the night was, who else but Kris Harvey. Ha rvey struck out 16 while no-hitting the Blue Devils.

The Trojans defeated Fred T. Foard 10-6. Harvey and Hass both hit homers. Harvey went 4-for-4 at the plate while Bradley Sherrill fanned six to get the win.

Harvey struck out eight to beat West Wilkes. He had three RBI. Howard, Hass and Elliott all had a pair of hits in the game.

The second time Bandys took on West Wilkes, Helderman homered to help Brett Bernhardt win 9-5.

It’s been like that all season.

Good hitting, pitching and defense.

“We’re working as a team,” said Hass. “Most of us are together off the team as well. Our younger guys are stepping up too.

Bandys has four sophomores starting.

“We have a lot of people that have stepped up,” said Miller. “Everybody in our lineup contributes greatly. That’s what it takes.”

That’s also the reason why the west side of the lake is shaking.
