April 29, 2002 - The Lincolnton-West Lincoln rivalry can get intense even in softball.
A couple of West seniors shed some tears after falling to Lincolnton 6-1 Friday at Betty G. Ross Park.

Bar H Rodeo starts next week in Boiling Springs

April 29, 2002 - The rustic old west will be in Boiling Springs, N.C. at the Bar H Arena on May 10 and 11. The
only sport originating in the United States, rodeo will appear at this time.
The 15th annual Bar H Championship Rodeo and County Festival will provide some of the best family entertainment available today.

April 29, 2002 - NEWTON — Newton-Conover took advantage of three Lincolnton errors to beat the Wolves 5-3
Friday.
The Wolves outhit their opponent (8 to 6) but the errors allowed four runs to come home. Meanwhile the Devils did not commit an error in the game.

April 29, 2002 - West Lincoln principal Debra Morris is expected to name a new head football coach sometime next week.
The school received more than 80 applications for the job, and Morris is said to have interviewed between 15 and 20 candidates.

For the second year in a row, they are conference champs.

April 26, 2002 - BELMONT — East Lincoln boys ad girls didn’t make the top three in the Big South 3A Conference Track Meet at South point high School Tuesday and Wednesday but they both had their moments.
The Lady Mustangs came in fifth with 61 points while the Mustangs were sixth.

Meghan Sehorn of East Lincoln had a personal best in the high jump to win the Big South 3A Champion.

It still was an ugly baseball game.
There were 16 errors in Thursday’s East Lincoln-Cherryville game. There was at least that much in walks.

Lincolnton golf comes in third

April 26, 2002 - Lincolnton shot 311 as a team to place second in a Midwest 2A golf match at Rockbarn Country Club.
Shelby won the event with a 300. Tripp Reynolds and Ben Goforth went 1-2 in the event for Shelby.
Lance High of Lincolnton was third with a 74 just four shots shy of Reynolds.

April 24, 2002 - West Lincoln's Zach Franklin competed in the long jump last week. Franklin and the rest of the Rebels track teams
will compete with Lincolnton and others in the Midwest 2A Conference Championship meet Thursday at Bandys. Meanwhile, East Lincoln's teams are in the second day of the Bog South 3-A Conference meet at
North Gaston today.

LINCOLNTON — The Lincoln boys tennis team defeated rival West Lincoln 9-0 in the battle of second place in the Midwest 2A Conference.
Both teams entered the contest 3-1 in league play behind league leader Shelby.

Lincolnton really needed to beat East Rutherford which is one of the top teams in the Midwest 2A Conference Tuesday.

West Lincoln is rebounding, East Lincoln is starting to make noise and Lincolnton is struggling at the plate.
After losing a big game to Kris Harvey and Bandys Tuesday night, West didn’t return to its usual self against Shelby Friday but did win 4-3.

April 22, 2002 - VALE — Good teams find ways to win, even if it takes another team helping them.
West Lincoln, the state’s fourth ranked team, had bases loaded with two outs and the game tied 3-3 Friday.
Chris Halubka dribbled a grounder to second. The Shelby second baseman flipped the ball to the short stop covering second base.

April 19, 2002 - VALE — West Lincoln High School made the most of hosting a track meet Thursday — for the first time
two years.
The Lady Rebels tallied 95 points to win their meet over Shelby (69), Newton-Conover (69) and Lincolnton (21).

April 19, 2002 - Lincolnton Optimist All Stars finished in first place in he Lincoln County Second-Fourth Grades All Star Tournament with

The Lincoln County Bassmasters held their April tournament April 13 on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.
Aaron Dixon won the tournament with a catch of 7 lbs. 5 oz. Dixon also caught the tournament’s big fish, a 4 lbs. 8 oz. bass.

April 19, 2002 - Lincolnton Paint & Glass finished in first place in the Second-Fourth Grades Lincolnton Optimist basketball league

April 15, 2002 - West Lincoln pitcher Jay Heafner came close to throwing a no-hitter against Lincolnton Saturday.
After a rough start, where Lincolnton got three runs off of errors. He settled down and threw five perfect innings in the game that was moved after it rained on Friday.

April 12, 2002 - Lincolnton's Sir Hodges gets some serious air in his long jump in Thursday track meet. He jumped 18 feet 11 inches for
second place.
Lincolnton boys defeated Bandys, Chase, Newton Conover and Highland Tech in the meet. LHS's Junior Bailey led the way by winning three events (long jump, 100 meters and 110 high hurdles). He ran the hurdles in 14.20, which tops the Associated Press best reported time in the state. Other winners were Derrick
Nixon (triple, high jumps), Clarence Curry (discus), Jared Webb (1,600), Perrell Bess (800). The girls team came in fifth. Stephanie Atkins (1,600) had the only victory.

They went to Bandys, won every match and came back home with a 9-0 conference win.

In Tuesday’s West Lincoln-Bandys softball game, eight batters were hit by pitch. Fourteen others were walked.
After all the walking, Bandys held off West Lincoln late to win 9-6 on rainy afternoon.

April 5, 2002 - West Lincoln Middle School wrestler Jamey Goodman handled himself well against the big
boys.
Goodman, who wrestled as a heavyweight for the school’s team, competed in the Future Champions National Challenge Cup outside of Chattanooga Tenn last weekend.

Brookins Field.

But Wolves’ errors in the field wiped out those efforts as visiting Newton-Conover pulled out a 7-6 win in nine innings Thursday night.

April 1, 2002 - VALE — Despite the best start in school history, West Lincoln baseball coach Allan Chapman is not yet ready to declare his
team the favorite in the Midwest 2A Conference race.
"We still have a long way to go," said Chapman, whose Rebels rocked Chase 10-0 Thursday at home to raise their season record to 10-0,
including a 4-0 mark in conference play.
