The Lincolnton Lady Wolves Varsity softball team suffered its first conference loss of the season Thursday afternoon at Betty G. Ross Park.
The Wolves (3-1) lost to Bandys 7-3.
LHS started fast, scoring three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Reylina Trevino drove in two of those runs with two outs in the inning.
Those runs would be the last of the day for LHS as Bandys scored seven unanswered runs to finish the game.
Bandys scored their first run in the top of the second inning and then opened up the game —
thanks to some Lincolnton miscues in the top of the fifth — scoring four runs to make it 5-3.
Bandys added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to finish out the game.
“We definitely didn’t come up with hits today. They out hit us 12 to three,” said LHS Coach Ann Anderson. “The two errors we committed led to two runs,
and that gave them a lot of momentum.”
Santana Edwards pitched for LHS, giving up 12 hits and seven runs but only three of those were earned runs.
Britney Wingler was the story of the game for Bandys.
After a rocky start, Wingler settled down and held LHS to just one hit the rest of the game. In seven innings, she struck out eight.
Maranda Smith was the hitting star for Bandys with two hits and two RBIs.
Catcher Andrea Stroup feels the Wolves must swing the bats more to win.
“I thought we played well but they had a whole lot more hits then we did,” said Stroup. “We made some good plays but they hit real well. We have to work on our
hitting.”
LHS’s Lindsey Sain felt confident after the loss.
“I thought we should have won,” Sain said. “We will get then next time.”
Anderson hopes her team will rebound to play well in the coming weeks.
“We have to come back and play hard against Ashbrook tomorrow and then get ready for conference play on Tuesday.”
