Softball team hands awards, still undefeated in conference

Published May 9, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, LTN Staff Writer

And the awards goes to.

Coach Scott Spohler and Assistant coach Julie Ortiz held their annual softball banquet Tuesday night.

Courtney Ewing and Stephanie Edwards received Most Valuable Player awards. The Mustang Award which is rewarded to a senior went to Carina Vinzant.

It pays to hustle, and that’s what Amanda Goodson and Brooke Michael found out as they both garnered Hustle Awards.

Hard work pays off as Nakita Moore.found out, as she took away the Most Improved Player Award.

The coaches also handed out two MVP Awards for the JV team. They went to Lindsey Smith and Debbie Jackson.

Players and parents alike said that its been a total team effort for the Lady Mustangs. It’s that total team effort that has them ranked no. 9 in the latest state poll.

One parent, Wendy Edwards elaborates, “Although, there maybe some standout players — they play as a team. The girls who won awards deserved them, but everybody could have won something.”

A large part of their success comes from the fact that Spohler tries to keep their ranking under wraps. He doesn’t want them to get complacent just because they are ranked in the state.

East Lincolns’ record is 15-2 overall, and an unblemished record of 11-0 in the conference. They will play their regular season finale today against East Gaston.
