West Lincoln upsets the No. 3 seed

Published May 14, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, LTN Staff Writer

NEWTON — West Lincoln’s Lady Rebels defeated Newton in the first round of the Midwest Conference Tournament softball play 6-3 Tuesday.

The Rebels started with a bang, scoring three runs while sending eight batters to the plate. They added a run in the third.

In the fifth, senior Lauren Mosteller had two RBIs to round out the scoring for the Rebels.

Coach Allen Hoyle was satisfied with the win.

“I felt like Newton came into this game a little overconfident, given that we’re a No. 6 seed and they were a 3,” he said.

The key to the game was jumping out on Newton early, he said.

“Getting those three runs in the first really shook them up,” Hoyle said. “That was important.”

Mosteller, catching for West Lincoln, led the team in hits and RBIs going 2-3 with three RBIs. Hoyle was just as pleased with her defensive play behind the plate.

“Lauren has been doing a wonderful job behind the plate all year,” Hoyle said. “She threw out two runners tonight and lately not too many have tested her. She’s a good solid player.”

Sheana Black picked up her eighth win of the season and struck out five in the game.

The win moves the Lady Rebels’ record to 6-9 in the conference for the year. Katie Thornburg went 2-4 at the plate while Black, Paula Jarrette, Katie Davis and Charlye Godfrey all chipped in with one hit apiece. Godfrey’s one hit was a big one as its result was a two RBI double.
