CARY — 2-A State Individual Championships were held Friday at Cary Tennis Center.
The Lincolnton High School duo of John James and Devin High played well in the state tournament, but came up a little short. They were eliminated in the first round. Despite the loss
they impressed many with their level of play. The LHS doubles team got a tough first- round match up against David Keesee and Adam White from Warren County (23-2, Mid-east Regional Champs). It was by far the best
first round doubles match of the tourney. Most agreed that both teams should have played in the second round.
The match was close from the opening game, neither pair could break the match open.
The Warren County team won the first set in a tie break 7-6 (7-3). Lincolnton’s guys bounced back and took the second set 6-4. The third set which had drawn a large gallery was intense.
The eastern team prevailed 6-4.
“The kids played their hearts out (both teams did) and its a shame they couldn’t move onto the next round, but they’re juniors and they will be back,” said LHS tennis coach Chris
Hoffman.
