It’s two titles down and one to go for the East Lincoln Lady Mustangs as they open the 3A playoffs today against Enka.
Weather permitting, the opening-round game is at 5 p.m. at the East Lincoln Optimist Park.
The Lady Mustangs enter the playoffs on the heels of a sweep of the regular season and tournament titles in the Big South 3A Conference. Their final record against league opponents this
season was a perfect 14-0.
Enka finished the season with a 17-4 mark and earned
the No. 2 seed in the Mountain Athletic Conference. However, East Lincoln coach Scott Spohler feels good about how his girls are playing.
“We have some good momentum going right now. We had a good game in the championship against Ashbrook. More importantly, we are just beginning to play together — understanding the team
concept more and more each day,” he said.
Spohler feels that the MAC is one of the strongest conferences in the state. The Sugar Jets eliminated the Lady Mustangs with a 1-0 win in nine innings last year. The two teams
were both No. 1 seeds coming into that game.
Enka then went on to finish in the top four in the state. The Lady Mustangs want to repay the favor this year and send Enka packing.
Spohler feels good about his girls’ accomplishments, but has one more in mind.
“We’ve completed two of our three goals by winning the regular season and tournament. Now it’s time for us to take our first run of the ladder and make it to Raleigh,” he said.
East Lincoln has home field advantage throughout the playoffs, or until the tournament shifts to the neutral site in Raleigh for the final four.
