Post 100 opens with veteran cast

Published May 23, 2003

First win will be No. 1,000

By MIKE POWELL, LTN  Sports Correspondent

CHERRYVILLE--With tonight's regular season opener postponed, Cherryville Post 100 is tentatively scheduled to open the American Legion baseball season Saturday at home against Kannapolis.

Cherryville High School's involvement in the state 1A playoffs and the uncertainty of the weather forced the season opener at Taylorsville to be called off.

Whenever the season finally gets underway, the experienced-laden Post 100 team is expected to contend for top honors in the Western Division of Area Four.

Coach Bobby Reynolds enters his 11th season with a solid nucleus that includes six players who have a season of college baseball under their collective belts.

The cast of veterans features infielder-pitcher Jay Heafner (Davidson College), pitcher-outfielder Chris Mason (UNC-Greensboro), catcher Davis Wise (Limestone College), infielder Jackson Beam (Brevard College), catcher Shane Summer (Blue Ridge Junior College), and outfielder Brandon Hurt (Lenoir-Rhyne College). Beam could be a late arrival due to injuries he suffered in an auto accident.

Other veterans who figure to make a significant contribution are Cherryville High products Josh McSwain (shortstop) and Travis Walls (infielder).

With its first win this season, Cherryville will reach a historic high-water mark--the program's 1,000th win. Entering the 2003 season, Post 100 has 999 wins and 666 losses dating from 1937, according to Cherryville Eagle sports editor and team historian Ronald Kiser.

Reynolds, who played on one of Cherryville's four state championship teams, is 202-119 through 10 seasons. His assistant coaches this season will be West Lincoln alumnus A.J. Henley and former Lincolnton High star Brian Sigmon.

Sigmon, who started at catcher this season for Western Carolina University's Southern Conference regular season champion, will serve as batting coach.

The Post 100 schedule

May: 24, Kannapolis; 25, Hickory; 26, Caldwell County; 28, at Caldwell; 30, Shelby; 31, Taylorsville.

June: 1, Hendersonville; 3, at McDowell; 4, Asheville; 6, at Burke County; 7, Lake Norman; 8, at Rutherford County; 10, at Hickory; 12, at Shelby; 13-15, tournament at Shelby; 17, at Hendersonville; 18, McDowell County; 19, at Asheville; 21, Burke County; 22, at Lake Norman; 23, Rutherford County.
