Caldwell County rips error-prone Post 100

Published May 28, 2003

Cherryville makes seven errors in 11-2 loss at home

By MIKE POWELL, LTN Correspondent

CHERRYVILLE--There was no question which team brought its "A" game to Monday's Area Four-Western Division American Legion contest.

That team was Caldwell County, which rebounded from Sunday's season-opening loss to Shelby to hammer Cherryville 11-2 in the rain.

As for Cherryville, coach Bobby Reynolds has to hope Post 100 has its bad game out of its system. Post 100 committed a ghastly seven errors, generated little in the way of offense, and saw its pitching rocked for 14 hits, including six doubles.

Caldwell scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings, then busted the game open with a six-run fifth aided by three Cherryville miscues. The score was 10-2 after five, and the only question was whether Caldwell would end the game early on the 10-run mercy rule.

Leadoff batter Scott Hall hit a pair of doubles, scored a run and drove in one to lead the Caldwell County attack. Ninth-place hitter Cody Hightower was the only Post 29 starter who did not hit safely in the game.

Cherryville (0-2) had eight hits off two Caldwell pitchers, but could not put anything together. Post 100 scored its two runs on a groundout and a double steal, and none of its hits went for extra bases.

Lincolnton High's Jason Hammonds was the starting and losing pitcher for Post 100. Jay Heafner struggled in a middle-inning relief role, but he could have sued the defense for nonsupport.

T.J. Wilson's two-run double highlighted Caldwell's decisive fifth inning. Chris Mason and Ben Lastra had two harmless hits apiece for Cherryville.

Post 100 notes: Cherryville could have some of its Cherryville High players for tonight's trip to Granite Falls for a rematch with Caldwell County. The Ironmen ended their season Tuesday with a 11-1 loss to Hendersonville in the third round of the 1A playoffs... The outlook is not optimistic for Post 100 closer-third baseman Jackson Beam, who may miss the entire regular season with wreck-related injuries.
