New coach will head East Lincoln, baseball

Published May 28, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, Staff Writer

DENVERThe Mustangs varsity baseball team will have a new face next year — Matt Neville.

Neville replaces Coach Bruce Bolick after 33 years at the helm.

“I feel it’s an honor to step in for somebody who has been such a stabilizing force in the community.

“I hope that when my time at East Lincoln is done I can at least share in those shoes,” said Neville.

Neville has a clear plan for his newly inherited team.

“I want to bring stability to the table while at the same time sending as many of my kids to the next level,” he said.

All the while, Neville wants to maintain a positive relationship with the parents and the team.

“If they buy into my demanding system, then I believe we will be successful,” he said.

Neville is in his eighth year coaching. He helped lead the Maiden Blue Devils to a 1999 state crown. He then spent time at Charlotte Country Day, then in Miami, Fla. as a head coach at Palmer Trinity. Before coming to East, he was the head coach at Providence in Charlotte.

Neville has a first-hand knowledge of the game as a player as well. He played for Fairmont State College in West Virginia from 1992 to 1996. At Fairmont State he received athletic scholarships, as well as academic ones.

Neville, looking ahead to next season, expects East players Shane Brackett, Trent Hovis, Mitchell Lynch and Seth Alexander to be instrumental to the Mustangs’ success as a team.

Of the returning players, he expects Grayson Schram to have a big impact.

“He’s an upcoming prospect, a hard worker and I look for great things out of him,” Neville said.

He also feels that Lynch and Schram will be the aces of his pitching staff. Lynch compiled a 7-2 record and a 1.91 ERA as a freshman in JV ball. He also pitched three complete games. Brackett will be a key reliever, and Alexander will be the closer for his pitching rotation.

Neville’s first two tasks are hiring an assistant and a JV coach. When Neville isn’t on the diamond, he will serve as a position coach for the Mustang football team.

“Baseball is my true love, but football is my exciting passion,” he said.
