Cherryville.
Post 100 looked listless in the field and at the plate in dropping a 9-4 decision Tuesday to Asheville in Area Four American Legion baseball.

night.
Denver cranked out 16 hits against Steele Creek pitching, but the same pitching hit Denver batters seven times in the game.

Keever (below) beat out a grounder for a hit in the sixth inning as Steele Creek first baseman Clay Smith leaped for the late throw. Keever finished with two hits on the night.

June 14, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — Justin McLeymore got stronger as the game wore on, and Wes Lovelace provided the offensive punch.
That combination was enough to carry Cherryville to a 6-3 victory over Area 4 arch-rival Caldwell County Thursday night before the biggest
crowd of the season at Fraley Field.

Twist & Tuck wins at regionals

June 14, 2002 - Local gym Twist & Tuck took five athletes to compete against over 115 others in the Region V Power Tumbling and
Trampoline events in Naples, Fla. recently.
Twist & Tuck athletes brought back seven gold medals. Brittany Cash, a level-10 athlete placed first on the Double Mini and the Synchro Tramp. Cash, who has competed for eight years made the regional team. She will compete in the nationals in Indianapolis, Ind. Katie Trueman won the Trampoline and floor events. Emily Moore, Hannah Ross and Ashlee Frazier all finished first on the trampoline, Over 15 athletes will represent the Lincolnton team at the nationals in July. The team is coached by Rick and Renee Moody.

The team known for the long ball got a three-run home run and a grand slam in the same inning on its way to a 12-7 victory before one of the biggest crowds of
the season at Fraley Field.

June 21, 2002 - GRANITE FALLS—Two West Lincoln High School products led Cherryville Post 100 to a 7-1 victory over Caldwell County Thursday night at M.S. Deal Stadium.
Chris Halubka pitched his first complete game in Legion baseball, and Jay Heafner continued his torrid hitting by going 4-for-4 with two RBI.

June 24, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE--A former assistant coach at perennial power Starmount has landed the head
football coaching job at Cherryville High School.
Tim Pruitt, an assistant coach at Starmount from 1993-2001, fills the vacancy left
by the resignation of Steve Wilson, who ended his two-run stint earlier this month after compiling a 2-19 mark.

June 24, 2002 - If West Lincoln baseball coach Allan Chapman had to pick one player as
the leader of his 2002 2A quarterfinalist team, that player would be Matt Craig.
"Matt did not have the best season on the team, but by far he was the emotional and vocal leader of the team," Chapman said
of Craig, who will continue his baseball career next year at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. "There were several times when he would take the coach's role on the side and get things
straightened out. He was the single leader of the team."

The team reeled in Charlotte Post 262, the Eastern Division’s first place team, put it on the pan and after two hours later, Denver feasted on a

June 26, 2002 - At Briarcreek Golf Club in High Schools, two golfers had holes-in-one recently.
Doug Shubert 70, used a 3-wood on the 241-yard No. 4. Jack Deal, Lee Hogan and Ernest Bertrund witnessed the feat.
Margaret Shelton, 76, aced the No. 7 hole with a 6-iron from 118 yards. Lucille Ravich, and Sharon Pitkin saw the event.

June 26, 2002 - (Contributed photo) The Lincolnton Lightning, a team consisting of 11 and 12 year-old boys from Lincolnton, won the
Mountainview League championship with a sparkling 11-1 record.
The team also took second place in their first ASSA tournament. Team members are: Dustin Phillips, Caleb Lail, Willie Scruggs, Dexter Shelton, Josh Sterne, Thomas Stanley, Bradley Morris, Ryan Floyd, Jeremy Womble, Shane Reedy, C.J. Carroll, Demery Brewer, Trey Drewery, and Tripper Crisson. The Lightning is registered AAU, USSSA, and ASSA. The Lightning team needs sponsorship to play tournament ball. Catawba Valley storms to title

June 28, 2002 - The Catawba Valley Storm 11 and under AAU baseball team won the state championship this past weekend with an 8-2 victory
over the Olde Providence Knights.
The Storm, which has won 19 consecutive games, completed a 6-0 run through the tournament. Casey Howard led the offense for the Storm with three hits and combined with pitcher Kurt Hammons for the win. Tyler Wharton recorded his third save of the tournament. A five-run sixth inning put the game away for the Storm, which closed out the win with a diving catch in center field by Tripp Cris-son. The Storm defeated the Raleigh Red Wings 8-4 in the semifinal game behind two hits each from Wharton, JW Laney and Joel Woods. Also part of the championship team were Dalton Hall, Alex Embler, Darrin Willis, Reggie Washington, and Keith Yount. They will advance to the AAU Nationals on July 16 held in Orlando, Florida at Disney Wide World of Sports. The Storm will travel this weekend to Kernersville to play in the USSSA State Championship tournament with their first game against the Gastonia Giants. .
