Kids learn skills while having fun at East Lincoln
By JOHN MARK BROOKS, LTN Staff Writer
DENVER— The endless dribbling of basketballs and laughter filled the Mustang gym on Tuesday.
The reason for the noise was the eighth annual Mustang Basketball Camp directed by assistant coach Chip Ashley.
“It’s nice to help out the school. It’s also nice to teach kids stuff — it builds up for East Lincoln’s future,” said Grant Covington.
There are a total of 62 kids participating this week in the camp. The camp is made up of 14 kids that fall into the 7-10 grade group and 48 kids that are in the third-sixth grades.
The camp has two objectives one for each age group.
“For the older group we want to work more on their skill development, because are getting ready to go on to the middle school or high school level,” Ashley said.
For the younger kids the camp is geared towards, what else, fun!
“We want to introduce them to basic skills of the game while at the same time having fun. Hopefully motivating them to play more,” Ashley said.
Although, the school year is over campers Justin Gilbert and Scout Monteith are still learning. This time the lesson is basketball.
“It’s really fun and I’m learning a lot,” said fourth-grader Gilbert.
“Yeah, I even learned how to do reverse layups,” added third-grader Monteith.
JV players Mitchell Lynch and Brent Brown are assisting with the camp. Varsity players Brandon Hamilton, Wayne White, Jamelle Lowery, Covington, Dante Roseboro, Darin Dellinger, Josh
Davis and Jason Smith all are helping out with the camp.
“Coach called me today, so I came out to help the little kids,” Roseboro said.
White, on the otherhand, is a former camper.
“I remember all the guys that played basketball and they helped me out a lot — so I wanted to help out the kids the same way,” he said.
The second week of the camp is June 9-12. Ashley expects about the same turnout. All proceeds raised by the camp goes to East Lincoln High School.
