Field reduced to four in N.C. Dixie fast-pitch tournaments

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

July 15, 2002 - DENVER — The North Carolina Girls Dixie Fast-Pitch State Tournament has been a blast at East Lincoln Optimist Park over the weekend.

Now it’s Monday and just the final four of the 10-and-under and the 12-and-under teams remain.

In the 10-and-under, it’s Cherryville, Randal Autry, South Stanly and Duplin American.

Kings Mountain, Burgaw, Fuquay-Varina and Duplin are left in the 12-and-under tournament.

The East Lincoln host teams held their own but have lost two games and are out. They both received automatic bids to the state tournaments but both showed they could play ball.

In the 10-and-under, East Lincoln lost 6-3 to Duplin and then 6-2 to Burgaw.

“Both of our games were competitive,” said coach David Baxter. “Things easily could have been different. I have not been associated with any girls that have worked hard as they did. Not having egos was refreshing. Nobody complained. Their enthusiasm was great too.”

Cherryville won the big winner’s bracket game and is in a  good situation.

The game of the tournament was the Duplin-Dunn contest. Both pitchers threw no-hitters for six innings. But in the bottom of the seventh, Duplin loaded the bases and got a grand slam to win it 4-0.

In the 12-and-under, East Lincoln defeated Fuquay-Varina 10-6, then lost two devastating one-run games to Kings Mountain and Duplin.

Oh, what might have been?

“It’s heart-breaking,” said coach Jeff Snyder. “That’s tough. I know the girls really wanted to stay in and play some more. They proved they belong. They showed they could have went all the way. We just ran out of innings.”

“I think we did a good job” said Tricia Sherer. “We proved we could play with anybody. We had the best coaches by far. I’m proud of everybody.”

Kings Mountain and Burgaw played late Sunday in the winner’s bracket game. The winner of that game will have the edge. But it’s double-elimination, everybody controls their own destiny, as long as they keep winning.
