Lincolnton’s Wilson attends Nike camp

July 1, 2002 - Lincolnton High School rising junior and basketball player Eric Wilson was selected and recently attended the prestigious Nike basketball camp.

The camp in St. Louis, Mo., was for some of the top prep basketball players in the country. This camp was for rising freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

Guard Eric Wilson, a rising junior at Lincolnton High School, attended the prestigious Nike basketball camp recently in St. Louis. There, Wilson competed against some of the top high school players in the country.

Opening of Denver-Asheville series is delayed

July 1, 2002 - The start of the Denver-Asheville Area Four Legion playoff series has been pushed back a day due to the death of Asheville’s athletic director.

The best three-of-five series, scheduled to open tonight at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville, will begin on Tuesday.

Denver beats Asheville in four-hour marathon

July 3, 2002 - It took four hours to complete, but Denver outlasted Asheville 11-8 Tuesday night in the Area Four playoffs at A.C. Reynolds High in Asheville.

The win gave Denver a 1-0 lead in the best three-of-five series, which continues tonight at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville.

Cherryville pulls away from Eastern Catawba

July 3, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE—Third-s eeded Cherryville Post 100 shook off some early rust, then steadily pulled away from Eastern Catawba 8-2 Tuesday night in the opening game of a second-round series in the Area Four Legion playoffs.

Post 100 pitcher Justin McLeymore goes through his motion in Tuesday night's playoff game at Fraley Field against East-ern Catawba. McLeymore went the distance in raising his sea-son record to 7-0.

July 5, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE —An evening summer storm wiped out Cherryville Post 100’s home game against Eastern Catawba Thursday..

Local players win honors at ASU camp

July 5, 2002 - Pumpkin Center and West Lincoln Middle School basketball players Parker French (left) and Taylor Woodie are shown receiving congratulations from Appalachian State head coach Matt McMahon. The two local athletes won honors at the recent ASU summer camp in Boone. Parker won the overall free throw competition in his division, while Woodie received awards for winning the "hot shot" and one-one-one" competition. In addition, Woodie was selected as out-standing player for the camp by the coaching staff. Both players also attended a recent UNC-Charlotte camp, where Woodie won the "hot shot" award and was again named outstanding player in his division.

Hamby’s 9th inning homer finishes off Asheville

July 5, 2002 - DENVER—Josh Hamby hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Denver to a 5-4 win over Asheville and a sweep of the second-round American Legion playoff series.

Michael Rue shows the pitching form that sparked Denver to a 9-8 win over Asheville Wednesday in game two of the series. Rue pitched seven innings, allowed seven hits and struck out eight in picking up the win.

Denver Post 455 coach Bruce Bolick has guided his team into the third round of the Area Four American Legion baseball playoffs. Bolick sends Post 455 up against No. 1 seed Hickory in the best three-of-five series, tentatively scheduled to open on Monday.

Cherryville is knocked out of playoffs

Home run lifts Eastern Catawba over Post 100 in decisive Game 5

July 8, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — The leprechaun’s magic didn’t work for Cherryville Sunday night as Eastern Catawba beat Post 100 2-0 in the deciding Game 5 to eliminate Cherryville from the American Legion playoffs.

The workers in the Cherryville press box constantly rubbed a small leprechaun statuette, which has a red hat with Post 100 and two cherries on it.

Hickory blanks Denver Post 455 in Game 1

July 8, 2002 - Hickory, the American Legion Area 4 top-seeded team, defeated Denver 5-0 Sunday night in the opening game of the third round.

Brock Thornburg struck out 10 to get the win while Denver’s David Rue held Hickory to just two runs for most of the game. Bradley Dalrymple struck out two in relief.

Top-seeded Hickory ends Denver season in three games

July 10, 2002 - HICKORY — Simply put, Hickory’s American Legion team was just too much for Denver Post 455.

Hickory, 23-4, beat Denver 10-1 Tuesday to sweep Post 455 in three games and become the first team from Area 4 to make the semifinals.

Denver pitcher (above) Justin Keever had a tough time against Hickory Tuesday in American Legion action. Thomas Abernathy warmed up on deck in the first inning against Hickory. He moved Josh Hamby to third. Hamby later scored.

July 10, 2002 - DENVER — Belmont’s Doug Sanders won the Southern Outlaw Super Series sanctioned “Topless One-On-One” for roofless Super Late Models, Thursday night at East Lincoln Speedway, as 2,087 fans watched.

July 12, 2002 - The Carol's Nursery sponsored softball team won the tournament championship for the Lincolnton Optimist 9-12 year-old girls division. Saturday East Lincoln Optimists will host the 2002 Dixie Fast-Pitch Girls Softball State Tournament for the 10-and under age group and the 12-and under group.

County Hall of Fame looking for nominees

July 12, 2002 - The Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame is again seeking nominations for inductees into the Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame was established in August of 2000 to honor, recognize and memorialize individuals for their excellence and remarkable achievements that have contributed to Lincoln County's rich sports history and community endeavors.

Cherryville in charge

July 15, 2002 - DENVER — Cherryville’s in the driver’s seat in the Girls 10-and-under Dixie Fast-Pitch Softball State Tournament at East Lincoln Optimist Park.

Cherryville is the only team in the tournament that hasn’t been beaten. The girls beat Burgaw 23-3 in their first game Saturday, beat Dunn 13-5 in their second game and Sunday, they slipped past South Stanly 4-2.

Cherryville's 10-and-under softball team may be closing in on a state championship after an undefeated weekend in the tournament at East Lincoln Optimist Park.

July 15, 2002 - DENVER — The North Carolina Girls Dixie Fast-Pitch State Tournament has been a blast at East Lincoln Optimist Park over the weekend.

Now it’s Monday and just the final four of the 10-and-under and the 12-and-under teams remain.

Rebels basketball coach optimistic after summer workouts

July 15, 2002 - Jason Kingery has a plan to improve the boys basketball program at West Lincoln High School.

One phase of it is a strong summer workout program.

“I think that the more games you play, the better you get,” said Kingery, who is entering his second year at the helm of the Rebels. “I don’t think there has been a lot of summer  ball  played here before. But the kids liked it. It helped their confidence.”

Start of football practice two weeks away

July 15, 2002 - Are you ready for some football?

That’s right.  Soon it will be time for local high school players to tightened up the chin strap and pop some pads.

Monday, July 29, is the first official day of football practice.

At West Lincoln, Coach Butch Parker is getting ready for his first football season for the Rebels.

West Lincoln assistant football coach Wayne Navey supervises a preseason workout prior to the start of the 2001 season. The Rebels' 2002 season under new coach Butch Parker, a former Maiden assistant, will kick off in a few weeks. Navey will remain on the Rebels' coaching staff this coming year.

Hurt expected to sign with Lenoir-Rhyne

July 15, 2002 - Lincolnton High School’s Brandon Hurt has received an offer to play baseball from Lenoir-Rhyne College and is expected to sign a letter of intent with the Bears in the near future.

Anderson Properties takes women's playoff title

July 17, 2002 - Carla Kay of Anderson Properties eyes a pitch in Tuesday night's championship game in the Women's Recreation Softball League playoffs at Betty G. Ross Park. Kay and her teammates needed only one game in the final round to wrap up the title, defeating NWJR 6-2. Lincolnton High alumnus Crystal Richardson led a 13-hit attack for Anderson by going 3-for-3 with a home run. Kim Houser, Karen Duncan and Delores McClain each went 2-for-3,  with McClain hitting one out of the park. For NWJR, Traci Dellinger, Kristen Yoder and Wanda Hester had two hits each, and Micah Cline homered. NWJR earned the right to play Anderson Properties for the title earlier Tuesday by defeating Cox Construction 7-2. In that loser's bracket final, Cline, Dellinger and Jaime Boyles paced NWJR with two hits each, and Bobbi Martin homered. Sonya Garmon (2-for-3) and Tootie Gregory (2-for-3) were the top hitters for Cox Construction.

July 17, 2002 - Pitcher Sherry Grigg of Anderson Properties lofts a pitch to the plate in Tuesday's championship game in the Women's Recreation Softball League playoffs. Grigg pitched Anderson to a 6-2 win over NWJR in the title game.

Cherryville claims N.C. Dixie 10-under softball title

July 17, 2002 - DENVER—“This is like the best time in my life.”

Logan Sturgill said that just moments after her Cherryville team won the 10-and-under North Carolina Dixie Girls State Softball Tournament at East Lincoln Optimist Park Tuesday night with a 5-0 win over South Stanly.

“We played as a team,” said Bayley Rainwater. “Our hitting was wonderful. I’m glad we won the state championship.”

The thrill of winning a state championship is shown in the face of Emily Self after Cherryville captured the N.C. Dixie 10-and-under Fast-Pitch title Tuesday night at East Lincoln Optimist Park.

High school, Legion baseball standout headed to Wilkes Community College

July 19, 2002 - Recent Lincolnton High graduate and Denver Post 455 player Luis Arce has signed to play baseball for Wilkes Community College.

Located in Wilkesboro, Wilkes Community College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Western Tar Heel Conference. The program, headed by coach Tim Lackey, annually plays a 40-plus game schedule against the top two-year and junior varsity teams in North and South Carolina.

A strong senior year and Legion season has earned Lincolnton's Luis Arce a spot on a college team.

Area 4 playoffs full of surprises

July 22, 2002 - Shelby and Hickory begin a best-of-seven series for the Area Four American Legion championship tonight in Newton.

It is no surprise that Hickory, co-champion of the Western Division, is there. Post 48 has roared through the playoffs, sweeping two series and winning a best-of-seven semifinal series four games to one. This team is a prime contender to win it all.

Hot-hitting Crawdads are worth price of admission

July 22, 2002 - HICKORY — It’s easy to forget the Hickory Crawdads.

But just up the road in 20 minutes you can see an exciting team that knows how to win.

The Crawdads won their division in the first half and are only 5½ games out early in the second half of the season. Overall, they are 56-41 for the season.

Parker happy with West mini-camp turnout

July 24, 2002 - VALE — This week mini-camp, next week boot camp.

With one shrill of the whistle, summer vacation ended for 71 boys who will attend West Lincoln High School in the fall.

They all showed up for the first day of the Rebels mini-camp, Butch Parker-style.

Junior Rebels are champions 

July 26, 2002 - The West Lincoln Junior Rebels finished first with a 12-0 record in a 14-and-under League made up from teams from Burke, Catawba and Lincoln Counties. The team members are Payden Houser, Travis Hullette, Jack Wombough, Chase Harbison, Eric Armstrong, Ben Poole, Daniel Smith, Ryan Rhodes, Junior Neal and  Tyler Carpenter. The coaches are David Hullette, Randall Neal and Tommy Smith. Not pictured is Terry Neal, Brad Goodson and Clint Goodson.  

Dazzle places in national tourney

July 26, 2002 - The Denver Dazzle 14-and-under fast-pitch softball team finished in ninth place in the National Softball Association World Series in Salem Va., where 83 teams competed. Mustangs ahead of the game

July 26, 2002 - DENVER — East Lincoln football lost a herd of seniors off the 2000 team.

That and getting used to Coach Jim Ruark’s system may have been the main reason the Mustangs started off 0-5 in 2001. But that won’t be the case in 2002.

The future of soccer?

LHS and West to start intramural programs, Sport firmly established at East Lincoln

July 29, 2002 - Lincolnton and West Lincoln are not ready to embrace soccer as a full-fledged sport, but both high schools are moving closer to starting up programs.

Pablo Esquivel of Lincolnton Middle School goes on the offensive in a match last fall. The success of the middle school team, which was a perfect 12-0 last season, has sparked interest in a soccer program at Lincolnton High.

East Lincoln's Tim Moonly (14) competes in a jayvee soccer match against Hunter Huss. Soccer is entering its fourth year at East Lincoln, which fields boys jayvee and varsity teams and a girls varsity squad.

Boys jayvee mentor to succeed Barker

July 31, 2002 - Lincolnton has stayed within its own staff to find a new coach for girls varsity basketball.

Boys jayvee and assistant varsity boys coach Scott Sekal has been promoted to the position, athletics director Scott Cloninger confirmed Tuesday night.

A big opening day

First day of practice draws excellent turnout at all three schools

July 31, 2002 - The intense heat on Monday did not stop high school football players from turning out in big numbers for the first day of practice.

Coaches at East Lincoln, Lincolnton and West Lincoln reported excellent numbers for opening day..
