 Sports - September 2002

Times Top 12

September 25, 2002 - Beginning this week, football forecasters Mike Powell and David Keever will rank the top twelve high school football teams in our coverage area. That area will include Lincoln, Catawba, Gaston, Cleveland and Rutherford counties.  The poll is based on win-loss record, head to head games, strength of schedule, and how the team should do in its own classification. The poll will run each week, and should continue until the last area team has finished its season completely.

1. Crest (3A) 3-0      ...beat South Point 28-7

2. Burns (3A) 4-0      ...lead by all-state QB Troy Goss

3. Forestview (3A) 3-0    ...good offense, great defense

4. Bandys (2A) 4-0    ...big test Friday vs. New-Con

5. South Point (3A) 3-1    ...second best 3A team in area

6. Newton-Conover (2A) 3-1    ...big win over Hickory last week

7. Hickory (3A) 3-1      ...host Crest this Friday

8. Shelby (2A) 2-2      ...don't let the record fool you

9. East Rutherford (2A) 3-1    ...QB Stencil Robinson big weapon

10. Maiden (1A) 3-2    ...starting to put offense together

11. Lincolnton (2A) 2-2    ...county championship on line Friday
