Knights fall to Maiden

Published September 22, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, Staff Writer

————————————

Without a win in JV or varsity competition North Lincoln Knights’ head coach Lonnie Custer knew he had to make some changes to get his football program’s morale up.

“We switched the roster up a little bit to create some competition for starting jobs,” he said.

One of the roster moves was allowing several freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to play JV to gain experience playing against kids their own age.

Custer looked like a genius as the result was a brilliant 30-22 win over football-powerhouse Maiden.

Custer was happy with his JV team’s victory.

“This is the first win in our program’s history. It was a much-needed shot in the arm as far as confidence is concerned,” he said after Thursday night’s game.

Friday was a different story as the Knights’ varsity team was ousted by Maiden 77-0. Custer was impressed with Maiden’s unrelenting offense.

“I was really impressed with Maiden’s passing game,” he said. “They rushed for over 400 yards and were still able to have an intricate passing attack in the first and second half.”

One bright spot in the miserable defeat was running back Todd Eaton.

Eaton, a junior running back, recorded the first-ever 100-yard rushing game in the program’s history with 122 yards on 16 carries. He also recorded an interception on defense for the Knights. Custer was really proud of his tough running back.

“I thought he ran the ball really hard and also played well on defense,” he said.

Custer was also pleased with his offense’s performance.

“We executed the best we have all year running the football, but we had several turnovers that really hurt us,” he said.

The coach felt that Friday was good for backup quarterback Justin Thompson as well.

“He was able to gain valuable experience at QB this past week which will help us in the weeks to come,” he said.

The offensive line showed much better technique and effort the whole game. Custer was proud of that unit and looks for them only to get better.

“We have a young offensive line, but I believe they are getting better each week,” he said.

The Knights fall to 0-5 on the season and Maiden ups their record to 4-1.
