Nov.2 - DENVER — A funny thing happened to the East
Lincoln cross country boys last week at the 3A regional in Hendersonville.
They qualified for the state meet.
"We were surprised," said East coach Carla Townsend. "We had a really good meet. Four of our top five runners had personal bests. I knew we had the capability. We stepped it
up a notch. We're very honored to go."

Oct. 31 - RALEIGH — Lincolnton doubles team of Andrea Stroup and Caitlin Andrews had an
impressive showing in the 2-A state tennis individual tournament at the N.C. State Varsity Courts.
Stroup-Andrews won the first round match 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 over Greene Central’s Amy Beaman-Sarah Moore.

Oct. 21 - CATAWBA — There was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde act in Catawba County Friday night, as the West Lincoln
Rebels went into the locker room at the half leading 17-8, but left 24 minutes of playing time later with a 58-24 loss.
The Bandy Trojans played host to the shootout game against the Rebels.

Oct. 31 - GASTONIA — Dogs may be man’s best friend. But turnovers are a football coach’s worst enemy.
East Lincoln junior varsity coach Scott Spohler had the enemy invading his team all night long especially in the second quarter against Ashbrook Tuesday.
The turnovers allowed the host Green Wave to score 34 points before halftime and coast to a 41-18 win.

Oct. 29 - CATAWBA — After West Lincoln built up a 17-0 lead early, Bandys roared back like a steam engine
and scored 36 unanswered points to beat the Rebels 58-24 Friday night.
The lost was the Rebels’ fifth straight. They are 4-5 and 0-5 in the Midwest 2A Conference. In four of the losses. The Rebels either led or were tied right
before halftime.

Oct. 29 - The tone for Friday night’s showdown between the Golden Lions of Shelby and the Lincolnton
Wolves was set on the first play of the game.
The Wolves returned the kickoff 37 yards but fumbled it over to Shelby at their own 42-yard line.
On Shelby’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Shawn Haynes raced 42 yards down the left sideline untouched for a 7-0 lead in only 16 seconds into the game.

The Mustangs did it despite completing one pass on the night.
They didn’t have to pass. They had a field day running the ball.

Oct. 26 - In 1967, the Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl I over the Kansas City Chiefs and
Lincolnton defeated Shelby.
It’s XXXIV Super Bowls later, and Shelby hasn’t been beat by the Wolves since.
Tonight, the two teams will give it a try again 8 p.m. at Von Ray Harris Stadium.

Oct.24 - MORGANTON — The Lincolnton boys cross country team entered the season as the defending conference and regional
champions.
Two weeks ago, Bunker Hill nipped the Wolves to win the Midwest Conference crown.
Last Saturday, the Wolves beat Bunker Hill but it was North Henderson who edged them and won the regional championships. The Wolves came in second.

Oct. 24 - The Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame will induct its inaugural class November 10
at the Lincoln Citizens Center.
County sports legends such as retired Lincolnton football coach and athletics director Von Ray Harris and former major league pitcher Tony Cloninger will be the first to enter
the Hall of Fame.

Oct. 24 - SALISBURY — Lincolnton girls tennis team ran into a tough Salisbury team in the second round of the state 2A dual match
playoffs and lost 6-0 Tuesday.
Salisbury (15-2, the No. 1 team in the Central Carolina Conference) won all six singles matches.

Youth Basketball Registration
The Lincolnton-Lincoln County Parks and Recreation Department is now taking registration for the youth basketball leagues for boys and girls grades 2-12.
Register at the recreation office at Betty G. Ross Park, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday evenings from 6 until 9. Cost is $20. Pre-season instructional clinics will
begin on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Oct. 24 - DENVER — The East Lincoln volleyball team’s magic carpet ride came to an end Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs lost in three games (15-5, 15-1, 15-0) to Kings Mountain in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
The East Lincoln squad was perhaps the best team the school ever had. .

Oct. 22 - DENVER — East Lincoln picked the wrong team to play for homecoming.
North Gaston rolled into David Clark Stadium Friday night with a five-game win streak, as well as the top-rated passer, rusher, receiver and total
offense in the Gaston-Lincoln area.
And the Mustangs could do nothing to slow down the momentum of the hottest team in the area, falling 33-0 in a Big South 3A Conference game played
before a good homecoming crowd.

Oct. 22 - Shelby, the preseason favorite to win the Midwest Conference, beat West Lincoln 27-7 Friday
night. The Rebels dropped their fourth straight loss, all in league play.
Shelby's Tavares Hill and O'Brien Wilson both scored twice on short runs. Shelby led 27-0 in the third quarter. Shelby held West Lincoln to a little more than
two yards a carry.

East Lincoln volleyball is taking it to a higher level.
The Lady Mustangs will host the first round of the state 3-A playoffs at home Tuesday.
The opponent will be the South Western Foothills No. 2 team, which more than likely will be Kings Mountain.

Oct. 22 - NEWTON — Revenge is sweet.
Newton-Conover blew Lincolnton out in the second round of the playoffs last year. That was in the back of the Wolves' minds when the two teams played Friday
night.
Lincolnton got payback and more. The Wolves won their six game in a row Friday with a convincing 35-3 victory over Newton-Conover.

Both Darren Wilson and Eric Wilson returned punts back for touchdowns to lead the JV Wolves to a 20-7 win over Newton-Conover at home Thursday.
Darren Wilson scored first on 60-yard run. Terrell Phelps had two interceptions and line-backers Pedro Fonseca and Brant Houser had solid games to help stop the Newton option offense.

The Lincolnton girls tennis team held off wind and McMichael High, 6-1, at home Tuesday to advance to the second round of the state 2-A playoffs.
The breezy win made it chilly for the players but most importantly it affected the ball. The wind made it difficult to return lobs and other high
shots.

Josh Belk ran for three touchdowns and lineman Justin Mintun scored the game’s only two-point conversion as Pumpkin Center Middle held on to beat rival East Lincoln 20-18 Monday at East Lincoln High’s Dave Clark Stadium.
It was the second time the two teams played this season.

Oct. 17 - Franklin Masonry won the Lincoln Fall Rec League Championship recently with a 24-10 victory over Heafner Tire. Mark Weaver and
John Neal both went 5-for-5 in the game for Franklin Masonry. Weaver and Buddy Shull also homered. Heafner tire was led by Jeff Hamilton who was 4-for-4. The Franklin Masonry players are Freddie Scronce,
Buddy Shull, Mark Weaver, Todd Sain, Jimmy Wentz, John Neal, Scott Childers, Shane Frankin, Shane Cook, Kyle Sismon, Chad Lowe, Frank Gilbert and Jerry Franklin.

Oct. 15 - It was another tough loss for West Lincoln Friday.
The Rebels led visiting Newton-Conover 14-7 in the second quarter before highly-touted Newton-Conover quarterback Curt Dukes broke three long touchdown runs as
the Red Devils rallied to beat the Rebels 28-14.
The loss dropped the Rebels to 0-3 in the Midwest Conference and 4-3 overall.

Oct. 8 - CLAREMONT — Just a couple of weeks ago, West Lincoln’s football team was sitting
pretty. The team was 4-0 and had the week off.
But now with losses to Lincolnton and Bunker Hill 34-20 Friday, the Rebels are 0-2 where it really counts, in the Midwest Conference play.
After falling to Bunker Hill, West coach Harold Warren said his team had problems that allowed the Bears to take the win.

They’re going to have to throw that test out.

Oct. 8 - GASTONIA — You could have forgiven East Lincoln if they were a little emotionally-fragile during Friday night's game with Forestview.
Let's face it. This team had been through trying times in the previous 10 days.
Travis Conrad, a backup quarterback for the Mustangs, was killed in a car accident after leaving football practice on Sept. 26. Plus, East Lincoln was 0-4, and hadn't played a
game in two weeks.

Edi Gillespie Perez is participating in the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon Sunday along with 35,000 runners from all over the world.
She is representing the American Lung Association of North Carolina.
Edi is a 1991 graduate of West Lincoln High School and resides in Raleigh.

Oct. 5 - Thomas Huntley ran for to touchdowns and teammate Ja’Melle Lowery threw for one
touchdown and ran for another to lead East Lincoln Middle School to a 32-6 win over Lincolnton Middle Wednesday at Von Ray Harris Field.
The Falcons jumped out early and led 16-0 before Lincolnton scored.
Huntley scampered in for a 10-yard TD run. On the two-point conversion, Grey Schram, pulled down a Lowery pass.

Forney was doubtful last week for the East Lincoln game. He did run the ball a couple of times in that game.
But Friday night against rival West Lincoln, it was Forney who made folks hurt.
