Quicker & bigger Lady Rebel team looks to improve

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

Nov. 21 - VALE — The West Lincoln Lady Rebels varsity basketball team will try to improve on last year 3-20 season.

There’s some hope with seven players including two starters returning.

“We’re basically a young team,” said head coach Allen Hoyle. “We’ll rely on our senior leadership. I think we can improve. We’re a little quicker and a little taller. We’ll use our quickness and try to run and press a lot. We’ll have to take one game and build on it.”

Returning starting starters, Stephanie Sain and Cheryl Kurnik will get the nod at the 2-guard and small forward slots.

Seniors Heather Helms, Jackie Derr and Kesha Morrison, and sophomore Lily Tallent will more than likely get a lot of playing time.

A lot depends if Hoyle wants to play a big lineup or a quick one with four guards..

One player that will figure in the mix is Jackie Burress, who Hoyle calls an impact player.

Other players Ashley Bourque, Kaylon Carpenter, Jeneatta Lopez, Jessica Leatherman, Sheene Simpson, Holly Wellman and Valerie Fite could play a big role as well.

Hoyle said the team could be successful if the Lady Rebels’ pressure defense works and take care of the ball.

He said they have played well in their scrimmage. He said they got the ball inside and hit 3-pointers.

All that’s going to help as the Lady Rebels step into a tough conference. Hoyle said Bunker hill, Bandys, Lincolnton and Newton-Conover and Shel-by are all strong in the Midwest 2A.
