East Burke wins WL’s Coaches vs Cancer clash

December 2, 2002 - VALE — The East Burke junior varsity defeated West Lincoln in the semifinals Friday and Cherryville Saturday in the finals to win the West Lincoln Coaches vs. Cancer junior varsity basketball tournament.

In the finals match, East Burke, by far the class of the four-team field, cruised past the Ironmen 87-45.

LHS wrestling results

WEST CALDWELL — The Lincolnton High Wrestling team won two games and suffered one loss Nov. 26 during the meet at West Caldwell High School. Lincolnton won 41-30, and 48 to 36 against W.C., and lost 21-59 against R.S. Central.

December 4, 2002 - DENVER — It was East Lincoln’s boys and girls chances to show what they can do Tuesday night against West Lincoln.

Both Mustang teams lost to their rival Rebels squads last Tuesday.

This time they got even. East boys held off a late West rally to win 53-44. The Lady Mustangs also won by nine, 46-37.

December 9, 2002 - HICKORY — West Lincoln and Lincolnton wrestlers had some tough times in the nine-team St. Stephens Indian Classic Saturday.

West finished fourth while Lincolnton, which competed without its top players, came in ninth.

VALE — West Lincoln wrestling team defeated East Gaston 48-28 Tuesday to give head coach Butch Ross his 150th career win.

West wins by pin came from Matt Avery Zac Elmore Brent Gates, Steele Barber, Eric Steele and Aaron Terry.

December 11, 2002 - While most students were getting back into the routine of a full school day, Dustin Hester was in Charlotte.

Hester and six other student-athletes from West Lincoln High School, accompanied by athletics director Wayne Navey and football coach Mike Harrill, attended a luncheon Monday at the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

December 11, 2002 - Lincolton’s Shante Shank scored on a layup with two seconds left to send the game into overtime against North Gaston and then helped the Lady Wolves seal a 63-57 win.

North Lincoln Optimist Club recently founded

December 13, 2002 - Lincoln County now has a new Optimist Club to help make a difference in the lives of children as well as our community.

The North Lincoln Optimist Club was founded on November 5, 2002.

Optimist International President, William Teague, flew in to charter this club.

150th win is special to West Wrestling coach

December 13, 2002 - West Lincoln head coach Butch Ross will remember his 150th  career win.

He didn’t know about it but he daughters dug up the information and told after his squad defeated the No. 1 team in 3-A, East Gaston Tuesday at home.

December 18, 2002 - Lincolnton junior varsity basketball teams got the best of their eastern Lincoln County rivals Tuesday night.

Both LHS varsity teams use spurts to put the Mustangs away

December 18, 2002 - The Lincolnton varsity boys and girls basketball team rolled to solid wins over rival East Lincoln Tuesday.

In the girls game, Andrea Stroup’s 19 points led the way to a 55-49 win.

December 23, 2002 - In the Duals Meet. St. Stephens (the state's No. 3 ranked 3-A team) defeated West Lincoln (No. 2 rated in 2-A) in the championship meet. West defeated Tuscola and Kings Mountain to advance to the finals.  Tuscola came in third and Chase was fourth. Shelby, Southwest Guilford, Kings Mountain and Starmount were the other competitor s along with East and LHS. East Lincoln won the match against the Wolves in their only meeting of the season.  West will compete in the Tiger Tournament at Chapel Hill after Christmas while East will be in the Mt. Pleasant Invitational.

BB&T tourney to have the Islands’  flavor

December 23, 2002 - One of the state’s and nation’s top small school tournaments is set to kick off Thursday at Cherryville’s Nixon Gym.

The sixth annual BB&T Cherryville Holiday Classic event starts at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26. The finals are Saturday, Dec. 28.

December 27, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — The West Lincoln girls and boys had different fates in the first round of the BB&T Holiday Basketball Tournament Thursday..

Wilson wins Bass Masters

December 27, 2002 - Scott Wilson reeled in four pounds and 13 ounces of bass to win the Lincoln County Bass Masters December tournament at Lake Norman.

Wilson barely beat Larry Patrick (4 lbs., 12 oz.).

Doug laws came in third (3 lbs. 9 oz) and caught the big fish for the tournament, a two-pounder.

Mitch Burgin (2 lbs,. 4 oz.) and Jeff Walls (2 lbs. 3 oz.) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The Bass Masters next tournament will be on Lake Norman Jan. 18.

First Charter Classic starts today

December 27, 2002 - The First Charter Holiday Classic  begins today.

The three-day, eight-team girls and boys basketball tournament tips off at East Lincoln today.

The tournament features local teams Lincolnton and East Lincoln. The event will continue on Saturday and skip Sunday and wrap up with the finals on Monday.

Plan B is to leave with two wins.
